This article is a part of the series Tracing New Testament Verses Back to the Gospel
The shedding of blood as part of the death of Jesus Christ for the sins of the whole world is essential to believing the Gospel. It is a requirement.
In this article, we will list verses by Jesus and the apostles on the importance and function of the blood of Jesus, while referencing back to Isaiah 53, where it says He was wounded for our transgressions and by His stripes we are healed. This article is a living document, so new references will be added as we find more.
The Last Supper
Matthew 26:27-28 (King James Version)
27 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;
28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
Mark 14:23-24 (King James Version)
23 And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them: and they all drank of it.
24 And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many.
Luke 22:20 (King James Version)
20 Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.
Comment: we see when Jesus is leading the last supper, he mentions the wine being the blood and that it was shed for the remission of sins. This can be brought back to Isaiah 53:5-6, and verse 12.
Isaiah 53:5-6 (King James Version)
5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.
